Care for Veterans of La Plata County
Durango Veterans Acupuncture Clinic
Durango Acupuncture Alliance began our first community service project in 2012, known as… Durango Veterans Acupuncture Clinic. This clinic is dedicated to offering free community style acupuncture treatments for active duty military, all veterans and their families.
Our intention is to provide individual Veterans in need and immediate access to healing in a supportive environment.
We hope to interrupt the cycle of unresolved trauma, and to assist in the process of recovery from the impact of war. Community style acupuncture is a simple, effective, low cost modality that offers immediate and effective treatment to large numbers of people. We are part of a network of over 35 other volunteer, donation based clinics nationwide.
Since the clinic began in September 2012, we have provided more than 700 free treatments to Veterans and their family members. From information gathered from our after treatment surveys (just under 100 collected) more than half reported the treatments helped to reduce their level of stress.
Other ways in which the treatment helped was with sleep, anxiety, depression,
nightmares, headache, anger, and coping with day to day life as well as fatigue, pain, hearing and improved mental clarity. One of the most common remarks from participants is how good it felt to have someone care for them.
The Durango Acupuncture Alliance is a group of independent, professionally licensed, and nationally certified acupuncturists who have joined together to offer our skills and the many benefits of Chinese Medicine to our community.
The Veterans clinic is now open twice weekly at 635 E 5th Ave in Durango just north of College Ave.
This free clinic is offered to veterans, active duty military and their families every Monday afternoon from 3-5pm and every Thursday evening from 6-8pm & Mondays in Pagosa Springs, CO at Cloud 9 Chiropractic. The clinic is offered by Danielle Hennes, one of the Alliance members.
No appointment is necessary but we ask that participants come to allow at least 30 minutes for their treatment.
Our futures plans include the development of a pain clinic for Veterans which will offer individualized acupuncture treatment as well as The Veterans Natural Health Network which will provide resources to access other health care practitioners in the community assisting Veterans.
Members of the public can receive this stress reducing acupuncture treatment on Friday afternoons from 4pm-6pm at 635 E 5th Ave in Durango. The cost is $20.00 and a portion of the proceeds will help to support the continuation of the Durango Veterans Acupuncture Clinic.
Treatments are based on the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) 5 needle protocol which has been proven to be extremely effective in alleviating symptoms of stress and trauma. During the treatment people sit in a circle of chairs while 5 tiny needles are placed on each ear.
The beauty of this protocol is that it is simple and effective and does not require the patient to be interviewed which eliminates disclosure issues. It allows a whole body, mind and spirit treatment that allows for the process of recovery to occur in the individuals own way. The group setting encourages the community of shared experience where safety and positive relationship can be created.
The NADA protocol is an auricular (ear) acupuncture protocol adopted by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, NADA. This treatment was first developed at the Lincoln Recovery Center in the heart of the South Bronx, New York as treatment for addiction.
Since its development much research has shown the NADA protocol to be an effective treatment for any condition where relaxation and/or detoxification are needed. It has been found very useful in helping treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The NADA protocol is currently being used in over 1500 clinical sites in the US, Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean for treatment of addiction, trauma, and stress reduction.
It’s a pleasure to assist our Veterans…
To Your Best Health!
