Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine excel at treating a host of menstrual disorders such as irregular or painful periods; and premenstrual issues such as irritability, breast tenderness, cramping and headaches.
Chinese medicine teaches us that most of these problems are rooted in an imbalance in liver energy. The liver is responsible for ensuring proper circulation of energy (qi) and blood throughout the body. When you experience PMS and cramping during menstruation, that indicates that the qi and blood have become stuck due to the liver energy stagnating. This imbalance can express both physically and emotionally.
Oftentimes premenstrual irritability, frustration or depression can be an invitation to look at where you may you may be stuck in your life. Are you able to express your emotions appropriately or do you suppress them? Are you able to express yourself creatively? Do you have enough time for you? If our emotions are stuck or if we are overly attached to them, our liver energy will be affected and could lead to problems with our menstrual cycle.
I have found in my acupuncture and Chinese herbal practice that it usually takes 2 to 3 months of working consistently together to get a woman feeling much better.
Other things that can move things along on the path to balance are a good diet consisting of whole, organic foods and a minimum of coffee, alcohol and sugar; lots of exercise especially in the week or two before your period; stress reducing activities; and nutritional supplements of fish, flaxseed or primrose oil, as well as a multivitamin/mineral supplement.
Remember, your body was designed to be balanced it’s just that life has a way of knocking us off course sometimes and we need a little help to get back. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help you get there.
To your best health,
